The Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter is proud to participate in Clear the Shelters Day, an annual initiative from NBC and Telemundo to help place shelter pets in loving homes. On Saturday, August 17th, all adoption fees will be waived as a part of the event. Residents interested in meeting prospective four legged family members can fill out an adoption application all week long.
Interested pet parents should make an appointment ahead of time. All rescue dogs and cats available for adoption are listed on the Smithtown Animal Shelter’s Website and on Petfinder. A qualified animal care team member at the Shelter will have your favorite Fur-baby ready in a meet and greet room or in one of the dog runs. The Clear the Shelters event runs from 8AM – 4PM all day Saturday. Residents who are unable to attend on Saturday are encouraged to make an appointment on any day leading up to Clear the Shelters Day in support of the initiative.
CLEAR THE SHELTERS HARD CASES:
This week’s Pets of the Week are the shelter’s longest residents or get passed up for reasons unknown.
Willow: The longest canine resident at the shelter, Willow, is a Terrier Mix who has spent two thirds of her life in a shelter and we don’t know why! At approximately 9 months old, she was surrendered to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. In a relocation initiative, Willow came to reside at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. We cannot understand why Willow has not been adopted yet, as she is a perfect dog (except that she’s not fond of cats).
Max: Max is a 7 year old Basset Hound/Corgi who was surrendered to the shelter, and may have experienced some type of trauma in the past. As a result, it takes some getting to know you before Max warms up. However, it is well worth it to put in the work to gain his trust. What’s a few visits to the shelter when you get the unconditional love of this dapper guy for life?
Oreo: Oreo, a Great Dane/Terrier Mix was adopted as a puppy, but was sadly returned to the shelter when his owner realized how big he was. Oreo is a fun loving, clumsy goofball who loves to run and play all day. He’s a great family pet!
Three’s Company: Meet Jack, Chrissy, and Janet, a set of siblings who were brought in as newborns two years ago during TNR (Trap, Neuter Release) kitten season and never got adopted. These two year old adorable Domestic Short Hair Tabbys have never known a life outside of the shelter. Isn’t it time that they find their furrever homes?
Lady of the Lake: This three year old Long Hair Tortoiseshell feline gave the gift of life to kittens that were NOT her own. She’s docile, affection and deserves some of that good karma in her nine lives.
Sweetie, a three year old female domestic short hair, came to the Animal Shelter by way of a Hoarder. Her gorgeous blue coat has a light tiger pattern, but her demeanor is as gentle as a dove.
All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board certified Veterinarian.
Kittens Available: Currently, there are a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster. If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two!
Thinking About Adoption:
The Smithtown Animal Shelter’s primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to us. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter, or we can set up an at home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets, or the household itself.
