Why should we care about our sewers? It’s not something you think about during your daily grind, nor a big cocktail hour topic. But the reality is, everyone from local businesses to children old enough to pour a glass of tap water are affected by our local sewer system.
Translation: Every member of the community should take interest in Proposition 5 on the November ballot, which would authorize nearly $30 million to restore environmental funds, supporting clean water infrastructure projects.
These projects include expanding sewers and improving on current systems, allowing Suffolk County’s $46 million Sewer Infrastructure Fund to commence. The Fund will aid clean water infrastructure projects, reduce the Peconic Bays nitrogen pollution as well as combat Northport Harbors Red Tide.
The improvement of current sewer systems means developing local business. Current code does not allow for local shops to expand or improve store fronts due to the restrictions businesses are subject to with the current sewer infrastructure. Manhattan is a prime example of how business can constantly grow due to its never-ending campaign to improve and rebuild sewer systems.
