Callahan’s Beach goers and Fort Salonga residents may soon have improved cell service along with a brand new Spray Park, Playground and overhang Pavilion. Site Tech has proposed to construct a 150 ft high cell tower on the park’s land. The construction of the tower would coincide with the construction of the new recreational facilities as a part of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program. Site Tech is willing to contribute approximately $250,000 for the recreational projects.

In order for the project to be approved, it needs to fulfill certain requirements of a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP). The LWRP has many state and local policies to best protect and use coastal resources. The project’s proposal involves replacing twelve unnecessary, unused parking spaces from the beach parking lot, along with the construction of a pavilion, playground, and spray park. The proposal additionally calls for the top half of the tower to be painted sky blue, and for the bottom half to be painted brown to mitigate potential visual concerns.

Public safety is of paramount importance regarding the necessity for the Cellular tower. Emergency calls made in the area have previously been routed to Connecticut, which can lead to an increase in response time, when seconds matter. The proposed tower will supply cell signal coverage at Callahan’s Beach, Sunken Meadow, and the surrounding area while transmitting emergency calls and communication more efficiently.

Prior to project approval, a Public Hearing will be held during the September 20th Town Board meeting, and will include a review of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, followed by an internal review of the Site Plan. The project is expected to be approved this Fall.
