Third Graders Pair up with Kindergartners for a pumpkin experience
Students at Branch Brook Elementary School rolled up their sleeves and got a creative lesson in agriculture and math last week. Kindergartners paired up with Third Graders to work together in some hands-on pumpkin activities at Branch Brook Elementary School. The lessons in agriculture, science and teamwork were all done using Pumpkins from an Upstate Farm that belongs Mrs. Polito’s father.
Kindergarten students from Sharon Weissman’s class joined with third-graders from Annamarie Polito’s class for a fall pumpkin experience. Each class teamed up with their respective buddies to work on one pumpkin per group. The students got to work together, despite age difference in a fun and exciting lesson in science.
The students worked cooperatively to count the lines in their pumpkin, investigating how long each pumpkin was on the vine. They measured each pumpkin using unifex cubes and got to conduct a float or sink experiment as well.
It’s great when a parent can witness his or her child get along with a younger sibling… but when teachers can teach students, years apart how to work together and take home a new lesson in science and agriculture… Well that’s just a priceless reason as to why our school district thrives!
