Boat in the Basement

New Children’s Book Helps Kids Understand Resiliency

By Maureen Rossi

At the end of the day resilient children have a tendency to make good choices, they can handle difficulties like an illness in the family, the death of a beloved pet or a close grandparent or even a divorce.

boatinbasementA new book called a Boat in the Basement is by award winning author Sharo Shebar and illustrated by Dawn Lee DiPeri.

DePiri says it can help children develop tenacity for the challenges that life faces them.  “Children with fixed mindsets tend to give up on the day to day challenges in school, home, and sports.  By fostering a growth mind-set and a positive attitude children can learn to persevere through some of the hardest circumstances,” she explained.

dawnDiPeri says Boat in the Basement is a children’s book that shows young people not to give up hope; it teaches them that they have the POWER to bring about change for themselves and others.

The story line is that eight year old Sara and Aunt Lee and Uncle Sam decide that want to take on the enormous task of building a boat from scratch, a dream of Aunt Lees.  Due to the heat Sara Lee and Sam decide to contrast the Boat in the Basement only to find that after hours of work the boat will not fit through the basement door – following the story you see how Sara looks to the past to find a solution for the present to help them complete their dream. The book is geared for the 5-10 year old market and includes historical and theological themes.  It s relevant more so today than ever when parents tend to “hover” over their children, afraid they’ll make mistakes, they try to make everything right for their children, to fix everything.   Any psychologist or Social Worker will tell you straight up – it’s a bad idea.   It is imperative that children learn to fail so they can develop resilience if they are to succeed in life, avoid drug use and be happy well-rounded adults.

DiPeri is a partner in the firm East End Advertising and the book is available on Amazon.com
