American Legion Post 833 of Smithtown and VFW Post 10870 have partnered with AARP Volunteers and United Veterans Beacon House to hold a new and/or gently used clothing drive for veterans and their families in need. Smithtown Town Hall will serve as a secondary drop-off location for residents.
A collection bin has been placed at the Legion Post at 51 Juniper Avenue in Smithtown. The collection efforts will run for approximately four months, from July through October. Accepted donation items include new and/or gently worn clothing for men, women, and children, as well as new sheets and bedding.
United Veterans Beacon House will collect the donated items regularly and provide them to homeless veterans currently residing in Beacon House facilities.
The drive is being spearheaded by AARP volunteer Olive Makris, who looks forward to a strong community response.
“We urge folks to consider donations of used clothing, or to consider purchasing a small pack of socks, t-shirts, etc. when shopping at their local Target, Walmart, etc., and dropping these donations off at the collection bin.”- VFW Service Officer Tom Mooney
