Congressman Lee Zeldin met with soon-to-be 8th grader, Matthew Redlein, fondly known as the Hero at America’s VetDogs yesterday. Matthew was awarded a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition by Congressman Zeldin, an Iraq War Veteran, as a token of Gratitude in setting a precedence when it comes to caring for our service members.
Matt has been changing the lives of our wounded Veterans, by raising money to sponsor America’s VetDogs for almost a year now. With a little hard work, clever marketing and the support of the community,Matt has raised over $30,000. The young philanthropist has been honored as a Hometown Hero, at a L.I. Islanders Hockey Game and has caught the attention of the media for his selfless efforts. But when Congressman Zeldin learned about Matthew’s good work, he arranged a very special meeting with the Nesaquake middle schooler to learn more about his efforts.
“We often look at those Service Members who serve overseas and call them our heroes… But now there are six Veterans out there who look at Matthew as their hero.” – Congressman Lee Zeldin
William A. Krol, the communications manager at America’s VetDogs was also invited to the meeting, along with Matthew’s very proud mom, Theresa. Both Theresa Redlein and William Krol are devoted staff members at the America’s VetDogs and the Guide Dog Foundation in St. James. They explained to the Congressman and his team that the non-profit group is able to give Service Dogs to disabled Veterans, as a completely free service, thanks to the generosity of individuals within the community. Krol explained how vital a Service dog can be for a Veteran with both mental and physical wounds of war
“The goal is to not further isolate a Veteran… Whether they need help with basic tasks like turning on lights, picking up items or even waking them from a nightmare, we’re providing them with a companion who essentially can help to give them back their independence.” – William A. Krol, America’s VetDogs Communications Manager
We spoke with a very excited Matthew after his certificate ceremony. He was thrilled to meet with the Congressman and couldn’t get over receiving the special proclamation.
“Look at this! It doesn’t get any more official than this” – Matthew Redlein
Matthew is still fundraising and has a new goal of $50,000 to reach. To help Matthew help our Veterans and reach his $50,000 dollar goal, Visit his fundraising page online at mattsfundraiser.vetdogs.org
