American Heart Month at Smithtown Elementary

American Heart Month

Stone ‘Hearted’ Creations

By Jessica Novins – Syntax NY

Smithtown Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District took part in a special event from Feb. 22-23 to coincide with American Heart Month in February.

Spearheaded by the school’s PTA and SITE-based Committee, the “Share the Love: The Smile Stones Project” gave each student in the school the opportunity to paint a stone with their own heart healthy theme. The idea was to encourage students to find different ways to use their hearts, whether through love and laughter or exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.

The stones will then be donated to local organizations such as fire departments, police departments, local veterans’ organizations and local hospitals as a thank you for their service to the community.
