The Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department will host two programs to help educate caregivers for those living with Alzheimer’s Disease. The Senior Citizens Department will hold a seminar on Effective Communications Strategies on Thursday, September 12 from 6:30PM to 8PM in the Senior Citizens Center Auditorium. The Department will host a seminar on Understanding Dementia on Thursday, September 26th from 6:30PM to 8PM in the Senior Citizens Center Library. Both of these programs are presented by the Alzheimer’s Association.
In the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease, families can face new questions as they learn to adjust to a loved one living with this condition. The Effective Communications Strategies program provides practical answers to these questions that arise in the early stages.
Dementia is an umbrella term for an individual’s changes in memory, thinking, or reasoning. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of Dementia and accounts for 60 to 80 percent of all Dementia cases. Participants in the Understanding Dementia program will learn more about these two conditions and their effects on the individual.

To register, call the Senior Center at 631-360-7616 between the hours of 8:30AM and 4:30PM, Monday through Friday. There is no age requirement to participate, and these programs are open to both Town of Smithtown residents and non-residents.
