606 Homes Dispose of Hazardous Waste

The Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways held its biggest bi-annual hazardous household waste event last Saturday, April 13th, 2019. Approximately 606 Smithtown households participated in the event, safely disposing toxic items not permitted in regular curbside waste pickups. The biggest turnout yet resulted in over 20 tons of hazardous materials collected.

“Residents are beginning to be more proactive in safely removing old toxic products from their homes while at the same time paying more attention to labels, avoiding the environmentally dangerous or toxic products at the store. This event is a great reminder to residents to be cognisant of our environment… the turnout and sheer weight of this collection is positive proof that our team of Environmental experts are doing a great job at keeping residents informed.” – Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

This event saw a 7% increase in participants from the last hazardous materials collection event held in October 2018. Hazardous materials were collected and manifested for disposal by Care Environmental Corp. The New York State DEC is expected to reimburse the Town for 50% of the contractor expense for this event.

The most common hazardous materials collected at the event for disposal were oil based & flammable paints, gasoline, paint thinners, gases, petroleum distillates, flammable solids, oxidizers liquids and solids, sodium/potassium nitrates, acids, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misc. toxic liquids (i.e. Chlordane, etc.) and solids, lacquers, lithium batteries, battery acids and various other toxic compounds.
