The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling & Education Center and Youth Bureau participated in an annual “Pizza Box Top Project” on August 13th. This project was part of a youth-led campaign to change adult attitudes about selling and providing alcohol to minors. Participating pizzerias had their pizza box tops adorned with stickers providing awareness to this issue that affects both youths and adults.
“Our Youth Bureau and Horizons Counseling and Education Center have done exceptional work together with the younger generation and just before the new school year. As a Supervisor I couldn’t be more proud of this initiative. As a grandpa I couldn’t be more grateful.” – Supervisor Ed Wehrheim
The participating pizzerias included:

“All the youth that participated in the Pizza box top event had a great time and were able to spread the word about how we are all responsible for under-age drinking. They learned that individual actions matter when trying to reduce underage drinking. We are pleased with the amount of support we received from the pizzerias that participated.” – Horizons Drug and Alcohol Community Coordinator Madlyn Makboulian
The traffic light stickers stand out on the pizza boxes, and provide a strong reminder that “Your actions matter! Preventing underage drinking is everyone’s responsibility.” Approximately 3,200 stickers were placed on pizza boxes all across the township.
