The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center and Youth Bureau participated in the 12th annual Stand Up for the Homeless event at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. Both Horizons and the Youth Bureau made significant donations to the event. The Youth Bureau donated backpacks stocked with school supplies, and Horizons donated diapers, baby wipes, and baby food.
“The generosity of others was on full display and it was clear that the recipient families were extremely grateful for the goods, resources, and guidance that they received.” – Matthew Neebe, Director, Drug and Alcohol Counseling Services, Horizons Center
Homeless individuals and families were provided transportation via bus from local shelters to take advantage of the resource fair. They were able to obtain donations of clothing, baby products, and backpacks with school supplies as well. Each family received important information on many vital resources, such as health insurance companies and help with obtaining public assistance. There were free mammography screenings, various healthcare services, and free haircuts.
