12 Smithtown Students Win National Scholastic Awards

A Dozen of Smithtown Student-Artists take home 23 Art & Writing National Scholastic Awards

A total of 23 national Scholastic awards have been given to twelve Advanced Placement art students from Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West. The talented dozen were recognized for submissions to the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Competition. Out of the 23 awards, ten were “Gold Key” awards, granting the recipients a chance at national recognition,  access to exhibition and publication opportunities, in addition to scholarships. Gold Key winners will officially be announced in March. 

The Student-artists to win National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are:

  • Luke Gelfman – one Gold Key in Design, three Gold Keys in Drawing and Illustration, one Silver Key in Drawing and Illustration
  • Anna Koke – one Gold Key in Printmaking
  • Danielle Napoli – two Gold Keys in Printmaking, one Honorable Mention in Photography
  • Kelsey Opinante – one Silver Key in Comic Art
  • Stephanie Rowe – one Silver Key in Comic Art
  • Ilysa Sirota – one Honorable Mention in Mixed Media
  • Jamie Werner – one Gold Key in Fashion

About the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards:

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards was founded to identify and reward students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and share their work with the world.  nearly 320,000 original works, across 29 different categories of art and writing, were submitted by students across the U.S. during the 2016 program year. Through the Scholastic Awards, students in grades 7–12 can apply throughout the various art and writing categories, for a chance to earn scholarships, have their works exhibited and published. 

Since the program began in 1923, the Awards have fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students.  Renowned Scholastic Awards alumni include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Philip Pearlstein, Sylvia Plath, Stephen King and Zac Posen.
